This was investigated by Piliavin (1969) on the New York subway. An actor fell over on the train, 2 observers measured who, if anyone, helped.
The actor was male, aged 26-35 and either:
– Sober with a cane
– Drunk with a bottle
– White or Black
62/65 times the actor with the cane was helped.
19/38 times the drunk actor was helped.
Males were more likely to help than females (90% were male).
